The Beginning

History of Servants of the Streets

The history of Servants of the Streets Ministries is a testimony of faith, obedience, recovery, restoration, and the leading of the Holy Spirit.  What began as a divine calling placed in the hearts of Mario and Regina Villela grew into a ministry dedicated to helping broken lives find hope, healing, and transformation through Jesus Christ.

A New Beginning (1986)

In December of 1986, Mario and Regina Villela were born again at the First Baptist Church in Canyon Lake, Texas, under the pastoral care of Gordon Hightower.
In the Fall of 1987, Mario and Regina, along with their two sons, Cody (age 3) and Joshua (age 18 months), left Spring Branch, Texas, and relocated to Utopia, in the Hill Country of Texas.
It was here in this beautiful, small community of 360 residents where they met Holy Spirit and received the second baptism with the evidence of a Heavenly language.
While living in Utopia, they were members of Living Waters Church under the pastoral oversight of Randy and Lucy Needham.  Filled with zeal in their newfound faith, they read their Bibles daily and met for prayer at 5:00 AM every morning.  Mario worked for a family-owned campground and the local Utopia Park as caretaker, while Regina stayed home caring for the children and managing home affairs.
In this serene and obscure setting, Holy Spirit began to reveal the purpose of their calling.

The Men Who Came Looking for Mario

One afternoon, a group of twenty illegals from Mexico appeared at the Utopia Park House.  Mario was at the church site roughing in plumbing for the new sanctuary, while Regina was trying to communicate with a front yard full of strange-looking and strange-talking men.  At a divinely appointed moment, Pastor Felix Burlingere drove by the park and saw what seemed to be a disturbing at best confusing situation. He stopped to assist and began translating the story of the travelers.  As the men had traveled through the rugged terrains of Mexico and Texas, they met a man in the woods who instructed them: “Go to the town of Utopia, find the park house and ask for a man named Mario…he will help you.”

Baptized in the River

As relationships grew within the community, Mario and Regina began ministering to individuals and families throughout the area.
Many people came seeking prayer, counsel, and spiritual guidance.
Some of the first baptisms took place in the nearby river, where lives were publicly surrendered to Jesus Christ and transformed by the power of God.
During this season, Holy Spirit continued shaping the vision and calling that would later become Servants of the Streets Ministries.

Ministry in the Inner Cities

As the burden for broken and hurting people increased, Mario and Regina began ministering in inner-city areas where addiction, poverty, gang activity, and hopelessness had devastated many lives.
Through street ministry, discipleship, prayer, and personal outreach, they encountered individuals searching for freedom, restoration, and purpose.
It was during this time that the vision for a recovery ministry rooted in biblical transformation began to grow stronger in their hearts.

A Vision Begins to Form

Through prayer, ministry experiences, and the leading of the Holy Spirit, God began to reveal a deeper purpose for their lives.  The vision was not simply to preach sermons, but to create a place where broken individuals could find shelter, discipleship, accountability, healing, and life transformation through Jesus Christ.
This vision would eventually become known as: Servants of the Streets Ministries.

The Birth of SOS

As the vision continued to grow, Mario and Regina realized God was calling them beyond traditional ministry settings.
The burden to reach individuals struggling with addiction, brokenness, homelessness, gang involvement, and destructive lifestyles became stronger with each passing season.

What began as prayer, outreach, discipleship, and acts of compassion would eventually become a ministry dedicated to helping people find freedom and restoration through Jesus Christ.
In 1989, that vision officially became known as: Servants of the Streets Ministries

Walking by Faith

The early years of ministry required tremendous faith, sacrifice, obedience, and perseverance.
There were many challenges, obstacles, and seasons of uncertainty, but God continued to open doors and provide opportunities to minister to hurting individuals and families.
Lives were transformed through discipleship, recovery support, biblical teaching, prayer, and the power of the Gospel.

A Continuing Mission

Today, Servants of the Streets Ministries continues to impact lives through recovery outreach, church ministry, biblical training, discipleship, and community support.
What began as a calling in the hearts of Mario and Regina Villela continues as a testimony of God’s faithfulness, restoration, and transforming power.
